Who Performs Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom Tooth Extraction can be done performed by your general dentistry, but today most general dentistry dentists will refer you to a dentistry that focuses only on Wisdom Tooth Extraction and other oral surgery. Teeth extraction, especially extraction of the third molars (wisdom teeth) requires oral surgery. This is because wisdom tooth extraction is either a preventative measure meaning that the third molars haven\’t completely grown in or because the third molars are causing problems. Both situations of wisdom tooth extraction would require oral surgery and sedation to complete the extraction.
Wisdom teeth usually need to be removed for one of several reasons. Wisdom tooth extraction can prevent crowding of the teeth in a mouth that has a jaw-bone length too small for third molars to come in. Along with crowding wisdom tooth extraction can eliminate the third molars growing up and pushing on other molars already grown in.

A common problem that wisdom teeth tend to do is to grow the wrong direction. Wisdom tooth extraction can therefore prevent wisdom teeth from growing into a nerve or growing into the jawbone which can be very painful or growing underneath and pushing up on other teeth. Wisdom teeth extraction can prevent that third molar from growing sideways into the second molar roots. There are all sorts of weird ways that third molars will grow and that is the reason for wisdom teeth extraction is if the third molars are seen on a dentist\’s x-ray that the third molars are beginning to crowd the mouth or grow in the wrong place in the mouth pushing on other teeth, etc.
Wisdom tooth extraction may also be done before those third molars even start growing in a certain direction. Wisdom tooth extraction can be performed when the wisdom teeth are still little buds forming at the jawbone under the surface of the oral tissues. When wisdom tooth extraction is done during this time of third molar growth it is done to prevent any possible problems in the future since third molars are known for causing problems. In this case wisdom tooth extraction would require a sedation dentist and an oral surgeon specialist which is a dentist who has specialized in oral surgery. A surgical fissure would be made in the oral tissue above the placement of the third molars and the third molars will be surgically removed, then the fissures will be sewn up so that the jawbone isn\’t exposed. After wisdom tooth extraction there is often swelling in the mouth and cheeks which will cause discomfort, but this swelling only lasts a few days after the wisdom tooth extraction. After a week the wisdom tooth extraction fissures will be sealing shut and the stitches dissolving. An oral surgeon or a general dentist will inspect the surgical area of the wisdom tooth extraction to follow-up with the healing.
One thing to be aware of during the healing of wisdom tooth extraction surgery is to make sure that you don\’t get dry-socket which means that your jawbone will be exposed due to the oral tissues not healing correctly around the place where the third molars used to be. This is one of the main reason for surgical inspection follow-up by a dentist after the initial wisdom tooth extraction has begun to heal.
